Introducing SleepyAngel keeps falling asleep standing up or sitting and getting hurt

I am in Southwestern Ontario and have a few health issues (have no kidneys, on dialysis 3 times a week and semi-weak lungs from over a handful of bouts with Pneumonia) and am on Paxil for my depression and anxiety. Lately, I have been sick and when I lay down for an hour or so my lungs start getting phlegm in them so it wakes me up to cough and clear and breathe and then go back to sleep. My sleep is so broken up that I guess I am not getting good sleep and have been falling asleep during the day and falling asleep while standing or sitting upright and have a lot of huge bruises to show for it. After being awake for a few hours my lungs clear and I go about my day and stop wheezing. One doctor did an x-ray only to say my lungs were clear. Again I woke today wheezing. ''

I called my Pulmonologist today but he was on the lungs but I did leave a message. I don't know what else to do. My dialysis nurse said I did have wheezing in my lungs when they listened during dialysis.

Hi SleepyAngel and welcome to the forums. Follow up with another call if you don't hear back from the Pulmonary specialist. You've probably tried this, but have you tried sleeping in a recliner or a rocker?

Thank you for responding so quickly. I don't have a recliner or a rocker as it takes up too much room in my apartment. I have not yet heard back from the Pulmonary specialist. I am finally starting to feel better from this 3-week illness and it seems my falls don't have to do with that but it is too soon to tell. I will see a sleep doc on June 5th. I have less wheezing so I feel I am over the hump of this but still, my whole family is now worried about my falls. Something is going on with my sleep and I am not imaging it. Perhaps the dialysis staff would not have believed me if it wasn't for all the bruises. Tuesday at dialysis I was in so much pain because my knees I had landed on Sunday with full force when I fell asleep while sitting on the edge of the bed. I woke up mid-fall and was like "Oh don't hit the desk again!" and that was how I landed on my knees. They didn't hurt at first but all day on my legs Monday brought the pain out of me. Tuesday dialysis I needed to use a transport chair (like a wheelchair but without the big wheels).

I can't wait til I get results after I see the Sleep Doc on June 5th. I don't know if I get the sleep tests that day or what as this will be my first time. I also have very bad restless legs ... annoying. I take pills for them but still doesn't get rid of them completely.

I’m glad to hear that you’re feeling better. The falls sound dangerous. Would the sleep clinic be able to give you any suggestions about how to prevent injury until you see them? Or could they possibly get you in any sooner?

Hello, Sleepy Angel, how distressing, especially if you are going through it alone! It makes me wonder sometimes when the doctors don't take us seriously. The sudden sleeping spells reminds me of someone I once knew who had narcolepsy. He would fall asleep during a conversation. I have environmental illness so I use IQ Air purifier, which helps me with my respiratory issues. Is the dialysis a temporary or permanent situation?
