    treatment in Edmonton

    Hello,

I've got bipolar and am moving to Edmonton. Is anyone familiar with the bipolar clinic out of university of Alberta? Also can anyone suggest a psychiatrist who is taking new patients?

    Thanks!

I have been seeing a psychiatrist from the UofA for over 10 years now. I have major depression so I cannot comment on the Bipolar clinic, but you can go through the intake process through psychiatry at the UofA and see where that takes you.

              Thanks for the replies!

Thanks for all your replies. I think this is my first time on the site, since I asked the question last year!

So I am in Edmonton (came from MB). I've been going to the Bipolar Clinic at the U of A Hospital. I find it difficult because nearly every time I have a new doctor who is training in psychiatry.

I've been going through a difficult time. In January I had a "bad cycle" (for lack of a better term) and now I am going through another bad time. I didn't have a full night sleep in over 9 nights. I ended up going to emerg and spending 7 hours there last week.

I work f/t M-F. (but I've already used up all my 10 sick days) When I called CMHA they told me they had no programs for someone in my situation. There programs are in the daytime.

I've been here since Nov 08 and haven't had a dr. Finally, I have an appt this week. In the meantime I've been using medicentres.

Welcome back Edmbigrl. Sorry to hear you're having a rough go of it. Hang in there. Let us know how you make out with your MD appt. Might not hurt to write things down ahead of time.

                  Wb Edmbigrl,

                  I'm in Ontario ... what are/is a Medicentres?

I know when I went to the local hospital here where they teach, it was such a PITA to have to explain and re-explain every time I saw a new neurologist. But there was also head guy that kind of was a constant. On the plus side I have found that they are probably more attentive then most doctors.

How strict is your company regarding taking time off?

Good luck with your doc's appointment!

Hello Edmbigrl and welcome back. Sometimes a local support group can help you find resources otherwise hidden. You may already know about these but in case you do not. Organization for Bipolar affective disorder is based in Calgary, but does have a support group in Edmonton. www.obad.ca . The Depression Manic Depressive association of Alberta is based in Edmonton and may have some info you can use. 1-888-757-7077 Take Care, paul m

Thanks Paul. I checked out their site and it seems the group in Edmonton is over for the season but they will be announcing new dates soon.

Today I am quite frustrated. I went to see a family doctor (my first appt). When I told her I was bipolar she told me she can't help me and that I need to find someone else. Her advise was that in July there should be a new set of doctors coming fresh out of university.

On the up side my employer is paying for me to get a psychiatric assessment. The psychiatrist will outline a treatment plan for me. Tomorrow I am off to see the BiPolar Clinic at the UofA.

If you re-read that it sez that the education group is over for the season. Further down on the right is a spot to click on for support groups in general around the province. Click on that and you can find out when and where the regular support group meets in Edmonton. I made the same mistake when I first looked it up as well.

General support groups can be pretty helpfull. I imagine it's the same all over CDA, we're stuck doing a lot of our own research

My G.P. will prescribe pills for me and assist in looking for a shrink, but will not give me the length of appointment that my illness requires and many new G.P's will not accept any patient with any hard to treat illness. It's not fair, but all the more imprtant that we try and band together to share info. Take Care. paul m

If you can get that psychiatric assessment, that could be a big bonus for you Edmbigrl.

I have an interview coming up in July for a GP and I worried that she is going to say the same thing. That shes does not want to take me cause of my condition. I am hope the fact that I do have a Pdoc and that he is treating me for my mood disorders that it will make a difference.

Also, Paul mention support group, if you have not gone and you have the opportunity, it would urge you to try it. I go to my local one and it can be very beneficial.

I think it will make a difference Woody. Then your family doctor can focus on other things. My GP sees me about every 3 months for a 1/2 hour Appt. We go over alot of medical issues that are ongoing, and new ones if needed. She asks about how I'm doing, but the treatment of my mood disorder she leaves up to my P.doc. She asks about my R.arthritis, but leaves the treatment to my Rheumatologist. I have more examples but it's depressing to write them all down. General medicine stuff, she takes care of. A family MD should be the one overseeing the whole picture of your health and well being. Hopefully if she knows that a P.doc is taking care of your mood disorder, it will be easier to 'get in'.
