    Need a Psychiatrist

My grandma who raised me died last June 2016, at the time, I have been living in the Philippines since 2004. My dad and siblings who I have not seen or talked to in 15 years went home to pay their respects. My dad convinced me to come back to Canada to provide better for my family. He promised 100% support. In September 2016, I flew back with my 14 year old through their help. I found a job right away and started working 2 weeks after my arrival. Once my first pay came, my mother asked us to move out. With no savings and a teenager in tow, I am now renting a room in an apartment because I can't afford even a studio of our own.

I am sponsoring my spouse and his 2 children to join us here and am encountering a lot of issues and delays. In January of this year, my mother suddenly decided to ask me to pay for the plane tickets she paid for, she says it was a debt. I didn't even know I had a debt, I thought it was them helping me. She harrassed me with phone calls and text messages until I finally just took out a line of credit so I can pay her in full. Not only do I not have savings, I am now in debt. And alone. Taking care of a teenager.

Because of all the stress and depression, I developed insomnia. Since January, the most I have had to sleep is 2 hours a night. For the past month, I have had anxiety attacks at least 4 times a week multiple times per day. I finally went to ER because of thoughts of hurting myself and was referred to a psychiatrist in that hospital. My first appointment with her last Friday she prescribed me sleeping pills which did not work. My second appointment with her yesterday she prescribed me anti depressants, Mirtazapine. I expressly told her that I am now in danger in losing my job due to my lack of focus and constant anxiety attacks and told her I need time off before that happens. I need a break, I know this for a fact, a counsellor from Morneau Shepell told me the same but this doctor just won't listen. Told me all the break I need is to walk 20 minutes after work.

I obviously do not want to lose my job, we have short term disability and I would like to take it but I can't without a doctor's note. So I am looking for a psychiatrist who will listen to me, who won't resort to drugs right away. She is making me more stressed insted of helping out. I have no one here and I want to get better. Please someone help me.

Welcome Jdoodles! You sound like you're in a bad spot right now. I am wondering if you have a family doctor? You can discuss with him/her your need for a referral to a different psychiatrist. Your family doc can also help you in the meantime with getting you on short term disability. It sounds like your job will be in jeopardy if you continue to work during this stressful time. If you can't get your sleep problems under control you risk making mistakes at work, being unproductive, and as you said experiencing debilitating anxiety. I wish you all the best. Let us know how you make out.

Thank you Neli, I do not have a family doctor. It is so hard to find one here that I can go to after work. They eitger do not accept new people or they are closed when I get off. It is pretty bad but I did not know that a family doctor can help with prescribing short term disability due to mental health for me. If it is a possibility, I hope to find one.

Welcome to the forums Jdoodles. I too think that starting with a family doctor might be your best bet. He or she can address some of the issues and at the same time refer you to another psychiatrist.

You know you need to have time away from work. It can be very frustrating not being listened to or have your concerns dismissed. Keep being persistent until you get what you need.

It is hard, especially since there are those who don't recognize mental illness as an illness, which can be just as dibilitating, or in some cases, more dibiilitating than a physical illness.

Lilian is an excellent GP she saved my life last years when everybody left me to die. She is here in Burlington. The blue pill is zopiclone that's what I take. Here is her ratings page with phone # and address. This is the best doctor I have ever had even over my specialist. It's a walkin clinic to so just show up one day tell her Mack sent you.
Visit RateMDs for information on Dr. Lilian Narouz in Burlington. View reviews, phone & address info, medical practice history, affiliated hospitals and more.

Thank you AJ and Mack, I am at work right now feeling so down. I can't focus. I feel like crying and can't just go to my TM for a mental break. It's crippling.

                        Hey Jdoodles,
I thought about your post and the struggle to find someone who will help. One thing I noticed is that you have short-term disability and I am wondering if there is also an Employees' Assistance Plan (EAP) or Employees and Families' Assistance Plan (EFAP - same thing). It is paid by the employer and confidential and has access to many different things (therapists, nutritionists, exercise stuff and they may be able to link you to health professionals or someone who can fill out the forms for short term disability).
I hope things get better soon.

Hi Jdoodles, does your workplace have an EAP - Employee Assistance Plan? I've used mine previously and found it helpful to at least vent, and also get someone else's opinion on your situation plus you could tell a doctor about the EAP's counselor's advice. Other than that, do you have any walk-in clinics in your area? If you don't have a family doctor then you may be able to get in to see a doctor through a clinic and often they are open in the evenings and weekends. I hope you find someone soon because being at work feeling like you describe is awful. Hugs.
