Has anyone in Ontario received long term benefits?? Or is there other assistance out there?? My husband has been off for over a year after being fired when he went thru a year long manic episode. We did not know he was bipolar at the time. It took me 3 months to convince him that he needed help(anyone who has bipolar disorder knows you don't want to be brought down from the high of mania because it's too much fun) Then I found out we couldn't just make an appointment in the mental health department, but had to get him a referral from our family doctor. By the time we got into a psychiatrist it was 3 months later. He gave us a letter for EI and my husband received 10 weeks of backdated EI that and told he would have to apply for long term disability. After another 3 months of waiting for his next appointment the Dr agreed to fill out the forms for disability. IT took over a month for the forms to get to me and then I applied. 4 months later and he just got denied because they think that now that he is on medication he will be able to return to work within a year. So never mind the fact he's been off for over a year with only 10 weeks EI and never mind that he has paid into it and never used it. Now we are waiting for our next appointment in April so we can appeal.
What do people do for money? We have been lucky because my husband had a decent amount of money saved and my mom has helped, but I expected we would be back dated to April when the EI technically finished. Any info would be very helpful.
