    Wellbutrin/Pristiq Combo

    Hi,

I am currently taking Wellbutrin 300mg, and Pristiq 50mg. Prior to this, I was taking Cipralex 5mg with Wellbutrin 300mg for about a year but after gaining over 20lbs, I told my doctor that I wanted to get off Cipralex, and try something else. She wanted to put me on Prozac but I detested. I did some research, and decided on Pristiq as it wasn't an SSRI. I figured that it would help me to lose the weight that I gained when I was taking Cipralex in combination with Wellbutrin but it hasn't done much. I have lost a 1-2lbs but that's about it. I have been feeling very uncomfortable in the weight that I gained. I just want to mention that I lose close to 50lbs while taking Wellbutrin 300mg on it's own before my doctor decided to add Cipralex but I could tell that I needed something more. After starting the Cipralex, even though it was a low dosage, if affected my appetite in a "bad" way ~ I was constantly craving sugar, and carbohydrates like bread, cookies, etc., and wanting to eat all the time even if I had just eaten 1-2 hours before. Pristiq has curbed some of my appetite, and cravings but I still get them from time to time but nothing compared to Cipralex.

My question for those of you who are on this combination, or understand how these two medications work together, should I potentially be able to lose weight while on Wellbutrin, and Pristiq? Since I was on Cipralex prior to taking Pristiq, would this have made it more difficult to lose weight? I know that Cipralex would be out of my system by now but would the effects endure?

I also want to mention that I haven't been able to much physical activity because I have a concussion. It's been almost a month so it's been tough but I try, and watch what I eat although there are times when I'm not hungry, and don't eat much, and then there are moments where I might indulge on a few pieces of something, i.e., chocolate. I have been drinking smoothies for breakfast ~ fruit, Greek yogurt, coconut water, hemp seeds, ice but I know that there is a lot of sugar in fruit so I need to be careful with this. It's frustrating because I was doing so well when I had the mindset to get healthy, and take better care of me. I was feeling great, and receiving a lot of compliments, which helps you feel better. Now I find that the extra weight makes me feel bummed out. I'm sure for those of you who have gained weight since taking AD's know what it feels like. What can I do?

    Thanks.

Welcome to the forum Isabella36. You're in a tough spot. Losing weight is not easy, especially when you add medication to the mix. I have read that Pristiq can reduce appetite, but that may not result in weight lose. There are so many factors involved in that. How much we eat, what kinds of foods & snacks we eat, how much exercise we get and medication or health conditions that can make it worse.

How long has it been since you took Cipralex? Once it's out of your system it won't be affecting your weight.

I know first hand how discouraging it can be to gain weight. I wish you the best in your efforts.

Hello Isabella36 and welcome. I can't give a better answer than AJ, but I thought that I would welcome you to the forum, I have mild diabetes and I find the less sugar, fats etc that I have early in the day, the less my cravings are later on. But that ma just be me. Good Luck finding a solution and Take Care. paul m

Hi Isabella36, I'm sorry to say I don't have a solution for you. But I am going through the same issue. I continue to gain weight with my medications, even with a healthy diet and physical activity. I hope we both find a solution to this frustrating issue.

I don't know much about this combination but I will add this to the conversation and yes is it CRAPPY lol. One of the weight gain issues is these medication slow down our metabolism sometimes to a halt. Example; when I was on Quetiapine and effexor I had a bowel movement about 8-11 days that is allot of extra Crap to carry around. I now take in more fiber than needed and it helps. I make a protein shake first thing in the AM with metamucil in it then eat bran flakes with my breakfast and other fibers through the day. I am still packing a few extra pound but not as much. Now I have movements twice a day YES makes me feel better.

I agree, the weight gain sucks! Doctors dismissing concerns of weight gain is annoying too. However, for me the alternative is worse. I've been down the road of not taking meds because of weight gain and suffered the consequences.
