Psychiatry NOT leading CHANGE in our time of need

I recently had a Eureka moment. In that moment it occurred to me I have NEVER heard of any friends or relatives having proper brain scans when they complain about depression, anxiety, bipolar, or other mood/behavior. I started to do some research from sites I admire and trust. I quickly found out that there are a group of American scientists who believe we are NOT AT ALL FULFILLING or scientific responsibilities regarding these mental illness. You see there is a TED Talks that goes into detail as to how our psychiatric practices are not based on good Science. The result, here's a pill based on a study, here's another WELL BRANDED new drug that could help????? Get my drift. Please see the attached link.https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=esPRsT-lmw8

Hello Crispy and welcome. Brain scans are still in the experimental . It take's highly specialized people to determine the results of a scan. Hopefully sometime in the near future we will see more brain scans are accepted. What tic's off more than anything is the lack of depth that the first interview with a doctor produces. In the USA it's routine for a shrink to do a intensive history, questions about diet, diet ,life style, etc, and administer several tests to help with the diagnosis. It would be nice if that happened here. Take Care paul m

Agreed agreed. I was asked several questions, filled out some written tests and given a drug that made my penis dysfunction. The drug was primarily for adult ADHD. The odd thing is that was NEVER one of my complaints. I'm 52 and could give a shit about that. I have a diploma from a college and it didn't seem to effect me. However, this depression and anxiety and my inability to live in the present went unnoticed by the Specialist.

I’ve met two different psychiatrist recently. I found both experiences appalling. They downplayed my struggle and focused on pot use. The Ted video you posted is bang on.

I’ll take the psychiatrist who is willing to look at a brain scan over the psychiatrist who works from a recipe book.

It amazed me how superficial their interviews were with their soft ball questions. They weren’t able to find any problems because they weren’t looking for any.

              Hello Chrispy,

I do hope that one day medicine will figure out mood disorders so we can stop feeling like guinea pigs. I often find myself hoping that at the very least my struggles will be a learning tool for someone else - maybe they can avoid some of the dead ends I've found myself in.

As Paul M. mentioned, it would be nice if at the very least our diagnosis was based on a more complete personal information... it seems rare to find any health care practitioner that thinks that solving the root cause is worthwhile - usually a band-aide solution.

I just had an image of a mood-ring like device that would show our real time brain scans... I wonder if that would be helpful or put us at a disadvantage...

              Take care,
              Kaight
