    Burning Mouth Syndrome

    Hi there
I was wondering if anyone has ever had burning mouth syndrome from any of their meds especially lithium......and if you have did you find something to help with it or did it go away when you stopped the med.
    Thanks

Welcome to the forums Sinceriously. I've had mouth sores from a variety of meds but not burning mouth syndrome.

      Welcome to the group Sinceriously,

I have not heard of burning mouth syndrome but I did have an awful "salt/metal" taste in my mouth for about a month after first trying Lithium.

        HI Sinceriosly,

Welcome to the forum. When I was on lithium, I had dry mouth almost all of the time. I didn't have burning mouth syndrome however. It sounds very uncomfortable. Currently, I believe I bite the inside of my cheeks which makes them sensitive to almost anything. However, you have made me consider that I may be something else.
        Wishing you well,

Did it go away after or did you have to stop taking it. I have been on lithium for a yr and all of a sudden woke up with it ....I also had the metal & sweet taste .....I am going off it now so my mouth is getting better ....I read up on it and it can last up to 5 yrs if you can't find out what is causing it ......I have had it for 3 mths now ....now I am having to try something diff after coming off lithium so getting all those anxious feelings again and sleeping too long and not wanting to go out......but know I will get better as have before....just time...Thanks for listening......Sinceriously

I also bite the inside of my cheeks ...it seems to be a symptom also I have found. Burning Mouth Syndrome is like taking a hot drink and you burn your tongue well your whole mouth is like that and is very painful......Hope you find out what it is for you

The taste went away after about 4 weeks but it is back now, my lithium level was toxic for a few days while I was in the hospital, so I am not sure if that has anything to do with it or not...I can't wait for it to go, I am thirsty ALL the time and the water tastes salty...Yuk.

Keep us updated on how you are doing.

                  Welcome to the forms, Sinceriously.

I'm sorry I don't have any experience with Burning Mouth Syndrome, I'm also sorry that you're having to go through it, it sounds rather unpleasant.

Thanks for your replies....it is getting a bit better now that I am not on the lithium, but the inside of my lips are really dry now ....I don't have the awful taste of water now so glad about that.....hoping it will eventually disappear....like waking up and it is gone just like it came.....
I hope it goes away for you too Atlantis......hope your all right and nothing serious for you to go into the hospital...

Nice to "meet" you Sinceriously. Good for you for getting to the bottom of your problem. Sounds much worse than my dry mouth. Are there any dental problems associated with it? Maybe a dentist could give you some options for treatment? Now that you are going off of the lithium, are you starting something else? I have a freind that has been successful being drug free, but honestly, the thought of going back to where I was terrifies me. I hope everything works out the way you need it to.

I'm not sure what the Dr is going to put me on in replacement but will be trial and arras as usual as so sensitive to meds...I have already been to the dentist and he fixed my dentures and no change so far the best change has been off lithium ....I am already on two other drugs and going drug free is not an option for me either ....I must say I do miss some of my highs but would not trade, more normal and out of trouble feels so much better....The mouth specialist did find a white spot on my tongue so have to have it checked again against cancer ....great....never smoked so home that is for me...

Well, good luck. Hopefully there will be very little "error" in your trial and error med change. I miss my highs too sometimes. But I am still paying off the debt incured because of it. So, I don't miss them that much!
