A criticism of cognitive behavioral therapy is that it only looks at recent concerns and troubles, it does not delve into the deeper causes of mental health diagnoses, such as an unhappy childhood rife with trauma.
A leading treatment for ordinary PTSD is EMDR. But C-PTSD is different, and several experts say EMDR won’t work. My previously psychologist didn’t know how to treat C-PTSD.
A 2016 paper* I read (listed below) says the therapy involves this:
- A “stabilization phase” (Phase I)
- A phase that focuses on the trauma and helps to process traumatic memories (Phase II)
- A final integration phase (Phase III)
*Paper title is “Critical Analysis of the Current Treatment Guidelines for Complex-PTSD in Adults,” and this is a review of treatment guidelines published by De Jongh, Ph.d et al in the journal Depression and Anxiety 00:1-11 (2016)
