Pan-Canadian Roundtable Series for Youth Mental Health – Atlantic Report

National Youth Advisory Council releases report on youth mental healthcare in Canada.

NYAC Atlantic Canada report cover

This report summarizes the findings of our first conference exploring the nature of mental health services for youth around Canada. This series of PanCanadian Roundtables for Youth Mental Health aims to highlight the lived experiences of young people with the mental healthcare system. Through these discussions, we hope to gain better insight into what works and what doesn’t about the current system and how we can provide better support to those who need it.

These pages discuss our Atlantic Canada roundtable which took place in August of 2021.

Some Key Findings

  1. Participant experiences were supplemented by community feedback collected prior to the event, bringing to light barriers including steep price tags, inconsistent medical coverage, far distances to travel, and seemingly endless wait times – over a year in some cases.
  2. Youth call for Canada-wide financial support for mental healthcare.
  3. When stigma is not a barrier, eHealth and tele-health services may help provide for those living in rural communities
