FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE. Belleville, ON – June 18, 2026

After nearly two decades of challenging mental illness stigma across Canada, Mood Disorders Society of Canada (MDSC) is proud to announce that its flagship Elephant in the Room (EITR) campaign is entering an exciting new era.

While 1 in 5 Canadians experiences a mental health problem or illness each year, stigma remains one of the greatest barriers to seeking support. Too often, people struggle in silence, not because help isn't available, but because fear, misunderstanding, and judgment stand in the way.

Since its launch in 2006, the Elephant in the Room campaign has helped change that conversation. Built on a simple but powerful truth—that mental illness is often the "elephant in the room," something everyone recognizes but few feel comfortable discussing—the campaign has inspired Canadians to speak openly about mental illness and challenge stigma in their families, workplaces, schools, and communities.

Over the past 20 years, EITR has become a nationally recognized symbol of awareness, education, and hope. It has sparked conversations, connected communities, and empowered thousands of Canadians to share their experiences and support one another.

Now, as the campaign approaches its 20th anniversary, MDSC is unveiling a bold new chapter. In recognition of two decades of impact, MDSC is refreshing and rebranding the Elephant in the Room campaign to better reflect today's realities and tomorrow's opportunities. This evolution represents more than a new look, it signals a renewed commitment to turning awareness into action. Full details will be revealed this fall.

The refreshed campaign will honour the successes and legacy of Elephant in the Room while embracing a more action-oriented approach, equipping Canadians with practical tools, resources, and language to challenge stigma wherever it exists. The goal is not only to talk about mental health, but to empower individuals to create meaningful change in their homes, workplaces, schools, and communities.

"Twenty years ago, we called out stigma and named the elephant. Today, we're inviting Canadians to move beyond recognizing it and take action. This next chapter is about empowering people with the tools, confidence, and knowledge to challenge stigma whenever they encounter it. Awareness starts the narrative, but action creates lasting change." Dave Gallson, National Executive Director, Mood Disorders Society of Canada

The next chapter begins this fall.
