Mood Disorders Society of Canada presents What is Bipolar Disorder? 3rd Edition

As part of their popular public educational series, Mood Disorders Society of Canada (MDSC) provides public education and awareness information on mental illness and subjects that affect our mental health. For people who are impacted by bipolar disorder, it is crucially important to become fully knowledgeable about the illness, as it can present like a roller coaster ride of highs and devastating lows. Bipolar disorder is a medical condition that involves changes in brain function leading to dramatic mood swings, which include either mania or hypomania and (usually) depression.

Through this educational resource, it is our hope we can assist by providing easy-to-understand, relevant information via What is Bipolar Disorder?, so that persons living with bipolar disorder, and those who care for them, their family and friends can become better informed. You can access this booklet here: https://mdsc.ca/edu/what-is-bipolar-disorder/

MDSC wishes to thank Dr. Elizabeth Osuch, M.D., FRCPC, and Michael Wammes, MSc, MSW, RSW who contributed to the researching and updating of this handbook.

As a society, mental illness affects all Canadians. The overarching message that Mood Disorders Society of Canada wants to share is that recovery from mental illness is possible. Knowledge and the ability to care for each other is the foundation and having a support network is crucially important.
