On Friday, June 12th, we lost our dear friend, colleague, and founding Mood Disorders Society of Canada (MDSC) Board member, Richard Chenier, of Collingwood, ON, at the age of 79. Richard devoted his life to serving others. His passion was evident in the vast number of organizations and initiatives he helped build, leaving behind an impressive legacy of accomplishments.

Richard led with empathy and compassion. He was a champion for the patient perspective, yet possessed a unique ability to bring diverse sectors together to collaborate on shared goals.

In the early 2000s, Richard was part of a small, dedicated group that envisioned and created MDSC. Following its incorporation as a charity in 2001, he served on the inaugural Board of Directors, helping to chart the course for what would become a highly impactful national organization. Beyond his groundbreaking work with MDSC, Richard also provided expert consultation services, supporting at least 43 different organizations throughout his career.

Richard’s generosity extended deeply into volunteerism. A few of the many causes that benefited from his wisdom, dedication, and lived experience include:

  • Serving as President of the John Howard and Elizabeth Fry Society of Manitoba
  • Sitting on the Board of the John Howard Society of Canada
  • Chairing the Government Division of the United Way of Winnipeg
  • Serving as a member of the Manitoba Committee on Wife Abuse
  • Acting as a founding Board Director for the Mood Disorders Society of Canada
  • Guiding and volunteering with the Canadian Mental Health Association of Sudbury
  • Coaching and volunteering for the Special Olympics in Winnipeg and Sudbury
  • Advocating for hundreds of patients and families to help them explore their rights and make informed healthcare decisions
  • Participating as a member of the Rotary Club of Wasaga Beach
  • Serving as a Board member for Breaking Down Barriers in Collingwood

Richard leaves behind his wonderful wife of 33 years, Diane Chenier, as well as his daughter, stepchildren, and grandchildren. We know they are feeling this profound loss deeply, and we send them our love and strength during this difficult time.

“Your legacy on this planet when you leave is how many hearts you touched.” – Patti Davis

Richard, you touched countless hearts, and your legacy is profound.

With love and sorrow,
