Position Title: Assessment Advisory Committee (AAC) Member
Time Commitment: 8–12 hours total between October 16th, 2025 and November 30th, 2025
Summary:
The Atlas Institute for Veterans and Families (Atlas Institute) aims to improve the wellbeing of Veterans and their Families, as such further upstream investigation is needed to better understand how to reduce the risk of experiencing loneliness and social isolation, and their potential adverse outcomes.
Mental Health Research Canada (MHRC) is a national charitable organization dedicated to advancing mental health knowledge in a unique but important way: we ensure the fulsome engagement of people with lived experience throughout the research process.
Together, our organizations are partnering to invest in a research funding opportunity to support an 18-month project investigating the mental health of Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members, CAF Veterans and their families.
We are seeking volunteers to join our Assessment Advisory Committee for the review of applications submitted to our upcoming Research Award competition for the Rebuilding Identity: Veteran Resilience After Service Award.
Location: This is a home office-based position
Duties:
The AAC Member is expected to:
- Attend a 1-hour online orientation session to familiarize themselves with the review process and evaluation criteria.
- Independently review and score applications using our online platform, Submittable. (Estimated 30–45 minutes per application. The total number of applications is to be determined).
- Participate in two 2-hour group discussions with fellow committee members (e.g., academic researchers, community leaders, subject matter experts, and people with lived/living experience) to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each application.
- Optionally participate in a 1-hour final interview with top candidates.
Qualifications:
- Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills, including in inter-disciplinary and cross-generational settings.
- Comfortable using basic digital tools, including Zoom or Microsoft Teams for virtual meetings.
- Access to a reliable internet connection and a computer or tablet for online reviews and discussions.
- Experience using Submittable is an asset (not required. training will be provided).
- Strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
- An aptitude for building relationships and engaging respectfully with diverse stakeholders.
- A high level of discretion, with the ability to handle sensitive and personal information with confidentiality and care.
- Strong sense of discernment and judgment, particularly when reviewing nuanced or complex issues.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a collaborative environment.
- Commitment to the timelines and responsibilities of the committee.
- Willingness to provide three references. a Vulnerable Sector Check may be required.
- We are looking to recruit Veterans and Veteran Family Members who reside in all Provinces and Territories in Canada.
