Mood Disorders Society of Canada is proud to announce Daniel Almeida as the 2020 recipient of the Marg Starzynski Mental Health Leadership Award. This award is presented to the individual whose dedicated leadership in community mental health awareness and through personal contributions to raising awareness of mental illness has had a positive impact on the mental health community.

This year’s recipient is Daniel Almeida. Recognized by Forbes as one of the 30 under 30, when Daniel describes what he loves most about being a mental health researcher, he often sites that he is able to not only do fascinating research but bring that knowledge back to the community. Indeed, this is just what he does. Daniel passionately teaches community-based workshops on suicide awareness and prevention, understanding mental illness and mental health stigma. He is always willing to collaborate and share his knowledge with various community organizations.

“Daniel’s research focuses on the brains of depressed individuals who died by suicide and who had a history of severe childhood maltreatment. He is a true leader in the field of Mental Health and the MDSC Board is pleased to recognize him with this national award.” John Starzynski, Chairman of the Board of Mood Disorders Society of Canada.
