Volunteer Forum Moderator
Mood Disorders Society of Canada (MDSC) is seeking a web-savvy and compassionate volunteer for the role of Forum Moderator. This volunteer will be joining a small team trained to provide resources to registered forum users. The forum moderator will welcome new members and answer questions on how to use the forum. The forum moderator will read new posts and when required, edit or delete postings that do not honour the values and purpose of the forum.
The MDSC Forum is an online community for those living with mental health challenges, their friends and their family members. It is a forum where people can share their own lived experience with mental health and the stigma associated with it. Members share resources and links to have access to MDSC’s content.

In this role you will receive training on mental health literacy, organizational resources, principles of peer support, and navigating the online Forum. As a forum moderator you will be able to volunteer from home on your own schedule and help us create a supportive online community to support folks impacted by mental illness. In your role as a forum moderator you will be directly helping our organization work towards our goals of combating stigma associated with mental illness and connecting folks with the resources they need.
Responsibilities:
- Read and review posts made to the MDSC Forum
- Ensure Forum safety by editing and/or deleting content that does not honour the values of the Forum
- Respond to postings respectfully and appropriately – including welcoming new members, answering questions, and providing guidance to users about how to use the Forum
- Provide users with resources/links to where they can find additional information on a variety of mental health topics
- Stay in touch with others on the forum moderator team
This is an unpaid virtual position with a time commitment of 2-5 hours a week, requiring a one-year commitment.
Qualifications
- Ability to work online with a stable internet connection and secure device.
- Excellent communication skills – particularly writing
- Capacity to remain organized.
- A compassionate and non-judgmental approach.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a virtual environment.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality, bringing concerns or questions to the attention of the senior forum coordinator when needed.
- An asset (not a requirement) is lived experience with a mood disorder or mental health challenge
