Mood Disorders Society of Canada (MDSC) is very concerned about the tragedy involving the death of Soleiman Faqiri. Diagnosed with schizophrenia around the age of 19, Soleiman was in custody in a Lindsay, ON jail.

MDSC advocates for improved mental health services, supports and programs for people affected by mental illness. We are witnessing far too many Canadians, who are struggling with mental illness, not receive proper and sufficient support. Without adequate mental health resources, many end up in conflict with the law and incarcerated. Tragically, we have witnessed too many people with mental illness in these situations without adequate care end up losing their lives. We call for full accountability and public transparency when these tragedies occur. We fully expect the coroner’s inquest to bring all issues to full public light.

Mental illness is a crisis in Canada, and governments need to increase dedicated funding without any further delay. We need to change the way our full society addresses mental illness to avoid such heartbreak and tragedy.

With our condolences and support to the family, friends and community.
