Today, we are waking up to the details of a terrible tragedy that has taken place in the beautiful community of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, a small community nestled at the foothills of the Rockies. A senseless act of violence that has shaken the very core of what we all hold so dear; our youth, the safety of our schools, and the peacefulness of small-town life.
We are in shock, and our hearts are broken. We are all saddened beyond measure by how painful this is for the families of those lost and injured, for those staff and volunteers who were in the school and for the full community. We are very sorry that this terrible event has taken place in your peaceful town and that you are all in such pain and are hurting so badly. A special note of respect and care goes to the First Responders, medical professionals and mental health workers who are there working with everyone impacted.
As a country, we as Canadians care for our neighbours and when they hurt or are in need, we always stand with them, take their hands and share their challenges. Today, everyone in Canada stands up for our friends and neighbours in Tumbler Ridge.
Today is going to be terribly painful. Tomorrow and the weeks ahead will be very difficult days to make our way through. We will share the pain, support the families, and we will find our way through this together.
Sadly, this is going to have a direct impact on schools and children in every town and community throughout this country. Our children and youth will be trying to deal with complex sadness and emotions while trying to understand why this would ever happen. They will worry about their own safety. Parents will have fears to overcome and will need to comfort and care for their families as always.
We all need to look after our mental health and support each other. For anyone who is overwhelmed, please seek counselling and support.
With love and sorrow,
The Board, Staff and Volunteers at Mood Disorders Society of Canada
